Book launch seminar: Handbook of Populism and Foreign Policy
Monday 13 october 4:30pm - 6pm
The rise of populism worldwide represents a crucial development for international relations. Not only does populism increasingly entail important global and transnational dimensions, but the election into office of populist leaders and parties in several countries around the world also means that they now have the power to shape the course of their states’ foreign policies. This is especially so on the international topics central to their political positioning, such as migration, international trade, regional integration, global governance, or states’ relations with Russia, China and the US. Yet, while the domestic causes and manifestations of populism have received sustained academic attention, its international dimensions are much less often studied systematically.
This seminar will shed light on how and to what extent populist actors seize upon, affect, and transform foreign policy once they make it to power. The discussion will be based on the findings of the recently published Routledge Handbook of Populism and Foreign Policy co-edited by David Cadier, Angelos Chryssogelos and Sandra Destradi.
