Biographie

Clément Renault is Senior Research Fellow in “Intelligence, War & Strategy.” His research lies at the intersection of intelligence and strategic studies and focuses on three main areas of inquiry. First, he studies the interaction between intelligence and decision-making, with particular attention to the conditions under which decisions are made and to how uncertainty, competing assessments, cognitive biases, and perceptions of adversaries shape the interpretation of information and strategic choices. Second, he examines how intelligence organizations operate, from the bureaucratic processes through which intelligence is collected, analyzed, and assessed to the ways services are reformed and reorganized in response to changes in the international order. Third, he investigates the use of covert action and clandestine operations as instruments of state foreign policy alongside diplomacy and military force.

Clément Renault was educated in the United Kingdom and holds a PhD in War Studies from the University of Glasgow. He is a Visiting Fellow in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London and teaches at Sciences Po. He also holds a master’s degree in international security from the University of Kent’s Brussels School of International Studies, as well as bachelor’s degrees in modern literature from the Institut Catholique d’Études Supérieures (ICES) and in philosophy from Université Paris Nanterre. With more than a decade of experience in international security, he has worked for the European Commission and the United Nations in West Africa, and has served as an analyst and strategic adviser to the French Ministry of the Armed Forces.
