Biographie

Clément Renault is Senior Research Fellow in “Intelligence & Strategy.” His research lies at the intersection of intelligence and strategic studies and focuses on three main areas of inquiry. First, he examines the relationship between intelligence and decision-making, exploring how intelligence assessments are produced and used by policymakers. Second, he studies intelligence bureaucracies, focusing on how their structures, priorities and practices evolve in response to war and changes in the strategic environment. Third, he investigates the use of covert action and clandestine operations as instruments of state foreign policy. He explores these questions through historical and contemporary case studies in democratic and authoritarian contexts, with a particular focus on Russia, the United States and Israel.

Clément Renault was educated in the United Kingdom and holds a PhD in War Studies from the University of Glasgow. He is a Visiting Fellow in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London and teaches at Sciences Po. He also holds a master’s degree in international security from the University of Kent’s Brussels School of International Studies, as well as bachelor’s degrees in modern literature from the Institut Catholique d’Études Supérieures (ICES) and in philosophy from Université Paris Nanterre. With more than a decade of experience in international security, he has worked for the European Commission and the United Nations in West Africa, and has served as an analyst and strategic advisor to the French Ministry of the Armed Forces.
