Associate researchers :
An Associate Researcher is a researcher who is not a member of the IRSEM staff, but who is regularly involved in the scientific activities of one of our six research units. As such, he or she undertakes to participate in the life of the Institute in accordance with the terms and conditions set out in the section "Contribution to the scientific life of IRSEM"
The “Associate” status may be granted, either on the basis of an internal request from the IRSEM Heads of Research Programme, or on the basis of an external request made directly by the candidate.
In both cases, the application will be discussed at the monthly Board of directors meeting. The final decision must be approved by the IRSEM executive team.
The duration of the association is two years. It is renewable each year after an evaluation led by the IRSEM Director, and in consultation with the Scientific Director and the Heads of Research Programme.
The IRSEM Associate Researchers are encouraged to indicate their institutional affiliation as “IRSEM Associate Researcher” when participating in external conferences or publications.
They agree to sign an authorisation for image rights and processing of personal data, allowing IRSEM to use their image and personal data in the case of scientific activities carried out at IRSEM under the Associate Researcher status.
- Research conditions
The Ecole Militaire site provides access to the “Centre de Documentation de l'Ecole Militaire” (CDEM), a large library specialising in defense and security issues, political science, geopolitics and International relations.
Associate Researchers have also access to the research meetings and seminars organised or co-organised by the IRSEM Researchers. Most of these activities are conducted in French.
Associate Researchers finance their own research agenda from their financial resources. They won’t be provided with an office at IRSEM or an institutional mailbox (with the possible exception of former IRSEM Researchers).
- Contribution to the scientific life of IRSEM
Associate Researchers contribute to the enrichment of the scientific life of the Institute by carrying out one or more of the following activities:
- Writing a research paper or a study in IRSEM format;
- Organising a scientific event (conference, symposium, graduate conference) with the support of IRSEM;
- Organising a research seminar on a given topic (in several sessions);
- Contributing to the training of doctoral students funded by DGRIS during the monthly doctoral seminar.
- Application procedure
The application must include a CV and a letter of intent written in French or in English (maximum two pages, Times New Roman, 12 pt, single-spaced, normal margins). The letter should indicate how the association will be mutually beneficial for IRSEM and the candidate, and how he or she wishes to participate in the life of the Institute.

Visiting fellowships :
A Visiting fellow is a researcher who is not a member of the IRSEM staff, but who is integrated into one of our six research units for a fixed period of time. As such, he or she undertakes to participate in the life of IRSEM in accordance with the terms and conditions set out in the section "Contribution to the scientific life of IRSEM".
The visiting fellowship may be granted, either on the basis of an internal request from the IRSEM Heads of Research Programme, or on the basis of an external request made directly by the candidate. In both cases, the application will be discussed at the monthly Board of directors meeting. The final decision must be approved by the IRSEM executive team.
The maximum duration is six months. At the end of this term, the visiting fellowship can be renewed for another six months, following the same procedure.
IRSEM Visiting fellows are encouraged to indicate their institutional affiliation as IRSEM Visiting Researchers when participating in external conferences or publications.
They agree to sign an authorisation for image rights and personal data processing, allowing IRSEM to use their image and personal data in the case of scientific activities carried out at IRSEM under the visiting fellowship status.
- Research conditions
IRSEM provides the Visiting Researchers with an office for the duration of the fellowship.

- Contribution to the scientific life of IRSEM
Visiting Researchers will contribute to the enrichment of the IRSEM scientific life by producing a publication in IRSEM format (research paper or study) and by carrying out one scientific activity from the following list:
- Present his or her research project in progress at IRSEM's monthly research seminar;
- Organising of a scientific event (conference, symposium, graduate conference);
- Contributing to the training of DGRIS-funded doctoral students at the monthly doctoral seminar;
- Organising of a research seminar on a topic of choice (in several sessions).
- Application procedure
The application must include a CV and a brief project written in French or in English (maximum 2 pages, Times New Roman, 12 pt, single-spaced, normal margins) on the considered research activities the candidate intends to carry out during the period of the invitation.
The description must include the following points:
1- The reasons for requesting a visiting fellowship
2- The requested duration
3- The deliverables (written productions in IRSEM format or academic events) to be considered during the period of the invitation.
