The objective of this conference is to examine trends and findings from the IISS Armed Conflict Survey launched in May 2019. Covering the key events and developments in 33 conflicts across six global regions in 2018, the Armed Conflict Survey is an essential resource for those involved in security policymaking, and an indispensable handbook for anyone conducting serious analysis of armed conflict. Published annually since 2015 by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the Armed Conflict Survey provides analysis of the political, military and humanitarian dimensions of all active conflicts, and identifies conflict-specific features as well as recurring dynamics across different theatres.

Dr Francesca Grandi and Dr Elisabeth Marteu, Editor and Contributor of the Armed Conflict Survey 2019, will discuss the multifaceted aspects of armed conflicts, including the use of humanitarian aid for strategic purposes and the challenge of criminal networks fuelling conflict. Dr Anne-Laure Mahé from IRSEM will contribute to the discussion in providing her expertise on African conflict and crisis.
